AWBS was founded in 1981. Its thirty-two original members established the Club in order to offer encouragement and support to American women and their families residing in the Berkshire and Surrey areas and to provide social and educational contacts and opportunities in an atmosphere of international goodwill. The purpose of the AWBS, with a membership today standing at nearly 400, is to welcome and assist all newcomers and their families, to promote friendship and interaction among members and to further their knowledge and understanding of England.
Every month, between September and June, we hold general meetings.
Members have the opportunity to pursue social, cultural, educational and charitable activities through the AWBS’s many special interest groups and events. Membership in the AWBS gives you the opportunity to meet other expatriates and to make friends as an individual, a couple or a family. In a highly transient community such as ours, the newcomer rapidly becomes an old-timer. AWBS hopes to ease your transition from one to the other, to help you bridge the cultural gap, and to provide warmth, friendship and fun. We want you to feel happy, comfortable and settled in your new home - whether you are here for a year or for the rest of your life.
