After months of planning, and several sleepless nights, we arrived at the morning of the first meeting of the year.
To say the Board was excited and nervous doesn't begin to describe the emotions but we all slowly calmed down and got on with our jobs as members started to arrive at Great Fosters Hotel.
This historic, Grade One listed building is set amongst 50 acres of glorious gardens and parklands in Egham, Surrey. Dating back to the 1500’s, it is the perfect setting for an English afternoon tea, or dinner in the Estate Grill restaurant. It’s a popular wedding venue as the gardens are glorious.
Our Membership Team was there early ready to great returning Members, and welcome new ones. We were very pleased to accept membership from over 30 ladies, most of whom had moved to Berkshire/Surrey over the summer. The IT team were kept busy helping ladies renew/join/update details online.
Our dedicated Activity Leaders were quickly busy at work accepting sign ups to over 20 different activities, tours and courses while our fabulous Best of Britain vendors were rushed off their feet selling their beautiful items.
It was a very busy, buzzy morning - the best kind of Club mornings!
The meeting started with a chorus of HELLO AND WELCOME from several members in the audience, spoken in several languages to reflect the International-ness of our Club.
I was so proud to introduce and thank the 2017/18 Board, their Committee members and all our wonderful Activity Leaders to the Members for their enthusiasm and dedication to AWBS, especially over the summer when there is so much planning to do! We are a fortunate club in that so many members are happy to step forward and get involved.
Philanthropy introduced Members to two of the four local Berkshire/Surrey based charities we are supporting this year, Your Sanctuary and Bracknell and District Parkinsons. AWBS will be hosting a Quiz Night later in the year as one fundraising event. We asked Members to vote on several other fundraising ideas, and at the end of the meeting announced the most popular four. The Philanthropy Fundraising Committee will start to consider the logistics of these and keep members informed and ask for volunteers to help create successful events.
Our General Business part of the meeting was brought to a close, and we were delighted to welcome our first Guest Speaker for the year, the hugely talented Cassidy CJ Janson, (most recently) star of the hit West End musical Beautiful based on the life of Carole King (she’s done so much before that!)
One of our Members asked her if she could sing a song from the show, and without hesitation she did! We were all enthralled with her powerful and emotional rendition of Natural Woman.
The meeting was brought to a close, and Members continued chatting and shopping and slowly groups disappeared to various local lunch venues or home to walk dogs.
