Last GM of the year

Grant Harrold, The Royal Butler

May is an odd month in the life of expats, as it’s often the time we learn friends are moving on or repatriating, while others are ‘still waiting to hear’. It’s also heading into the final stretch of the school year, with kids doing exams after crazy busy months of university applications. There’s graduations, end of year concerts, transitions on PTO Boards - it’s very busy! There’s summer holiday and/or staycation planning to be finalised, and the never ending prayers for ‘good weather’ in the UK.

To those friends who are leaving, thank you for all you’ve done for and with AWBS. We’re so glad to have met you and made happy memories together.

We gave thanks also to the founding members of AWBS who, 35 years ago gave of their time and established this great organisation, creating what has become a thriving community of adventurous, interesting, accomplished women. They laid the foundations for what the Club has become today.

AWBS chooses to support local charities each year as a means of helping us connect with and give back to our community. Our VP Philanthropy had the pleasure of presenting Your Sanctuary, Bracknell and District Parkinson’s Branch, The Club House Project and ABC To Read with their cheques from money raised during the year, the highlight of which was the Christmas Craft Fayre, held at Royal Holloway College in November 2016.

It was very humbling to hear how the money will make such a difference to these organisations’ ongoing projects.

We were very excited to have Grant Harrold, The Royal Butler as our final speaker of the year. Some AWBS Members met him in 2016 when we shared the delightful experience of an English afternoon tea in a private dining room at The Ritz in London, with Grant and HRH Princess Katarina of Yugoslavia and Spain.

From a young age, Grant knew he wanted to be an actor or a butler, and one day work for the Royal Family and dance with the Queen. His mum laughed and asked him ‘and how do you think that’s going to happen?’ But as luck and/or fate and determination would have it, he’s accomplished all that, and more. We felt very spoilt when Grant offered to stay and chat, share in a few selfies and offer to come back soon to AWBS.

And with that, our General Meeting schedule concluded.

We stayed and chatted over a delicious light lunch and coffee.

We hugged friends who are leaving over summer.

We made promises to meet up over the long summer break and/or visit friends once settled.

If you’re moving to Berkshire/Surrey over summer, please check out our website at to learn more about our Club, or email membership [at] to find out about becoming a member.
